Rejigging this forum

In recent years the discord has been the main focus for tidal + strudel, but probably we will move away from that. The obvious thing to do would be to refresh this discourse forum.

As strudel has grown into a fully-fledged project the first thing I think is to rename the forum. We could call it “the uzu forum” and take on the uzu.lurk.org domain for it (redirecting from club.tidalcycles.org).

We can also restructure things around to support sections for the different uzu langs. This will take some experimentation to get right.

Also with the rise of LLM scrapers I think we might be better off making more or maybe all of the forum readable only by logged in users. Currently it’s only the lounge area for that is set this way. However, perhaps this is a losing battle to spend time and thought on..

We can also make use of the live chat functionality - currently the forum deletes chat older than 90 days, not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

Other thoughts welcome!

Ok I’ve started reorganising into Tidal and Strudel sections. I’ll copy the general layout from the discord I guess, including the popular ‘what if’

I removed facebook logins (which wasn’t working anyway) and added login via discord.

A post was split to a new topic: LLM chat

It’s nice to see that this forum has a way to log in with discord giving access to the profile picture, but also allowing for username changes (I aligned mine with my codeberg username).

It seems like the display of categories is shortened in some views:

The 1st and the 3rd post are tagged “Strudel” in addition to “Innards” and “Q and A”. It’s clear from the title of the question, but personally, I would not add Strudel in the title of a post which I put into a strudel category.

This might make things annoying for non-strudel users of this forum.

Yes I noticed this too. I’ve been looking around but can’t find anything in the settings to show the parent category. One option could be to use tags more.. Here I tagged one of your messages with ‘strudel’ (after enabling the tag feature) and it appears like this:

Alternatively the language could be the category (tidal, strudel etc) and the tag the type of post. That would be a radical change but would probably work better.

However I think expecting everyone to tag their posts according to a scheme would be optimistic and it would require a lot of admin work to fix things..

An alternative would be to introduce a separate “Strudel Questions and Answers” category, not two “Strudel” and “Q & A” categories.

Is the two-color option of some categories a setting for a specific category or is this a thing which is derived from the parent?

The two colours come from category and subcategory colours.

Yes I thought about making toplevel categories but then you lose the ability to go to the parent category to see all the e.g. tidal posts. I’ll experiment with the tagging..

Ok done, it seems to work better this way?

I set things so you have to select exactly one tag from a group of tags representing the previous categories.
